4e: Growing and Developing Professionally

IMG_6121.HEIC

As an education candidate, I am aware of the importance of growing and developing professionally. As an educator, continuing to develop your knowledge is key to maintaining a successful career. The world around us is constantly changing, and participating in professional growth can help us as educators stay up to date with new information. I have attached all of the professional development units that I have completed throughout my time at WVSU. During my time in the education department, I have been able to seek out opportunities for professional development and will use this newfound knowledge to conduct action research in my own classroom. Another way in which I have grown and developed professionally has been through attending a faculty senate day in my current placement at Holz Elementary. I found this to be a very important addition to my professional development because I want to keep up to date with school policies, strategies, and other aspects used within the school I am teaching at. I was able to participate in different workshops such as one on the Science of Reading being used within the school. During this, I was able to get feedback on practice from both supervisors and colleagues. This day of training allowed me to see how important it is to speak your mind as an educator to make suggestions and teach new things to colleagues. I was able to see how other teachers made suggestions that were validated and appreciated by those involved. This knowledge will allow me to initiate important activities to contribute to the profession in the future in order to ensure the best experience for all students and teachers. Continuing to gain professional development relates to the Transformative Theory researched by Jack Mezirow. Professional Development allows the learner to change their thinking based on new knowledge in order to make changes for betterment and success within the classroom.
