1d: Knowledge of Resources
As an education candidate, I understand the importance of knowing the resources available to you. I have extensive knowledge of resources not only for use in the classroom but also for extending my own professional skills. As a student attending West Virginia State University, I was able to organize different mentor texts into resource logs based on topic. These are for use in the Elementary School discipline within the ELA content area. I made sure to include areas of the ELA standard that are focused on throughout different grade levels so that I always have these resources for use in any classroom setting. My cooperating teacher and I also conducted a school and worldwide project this year during Valentine's Day. This project allowed us to gain resources from different schools and businesses from different states within America. For this project, we traded Valentine's Day cards with different people and schools that listed different facts about the states that they were from. Through this, we were able to connect to different school districts, businesses, and even different countries. I was able to assist with this by having knowledge of my resources from different states to ensure we received at least one card from every state. Through this project, my cooperating teacher and I were able to connect with resources available in the school district, community, professional organizations, universities, and on the internet. We were able to receive cards from all different states, countries, and age levels. This was a project that had a high success rate and created lifelong resource relationships. By doing this, my cooperating teacher and I were able to model for our students how important it is to use and be aware of the resources available to you. This goes along with Albert Bandura's social learning theory and how modeling plays a key role in student learning. This research-based strategy supports our decision making and developing resources that assisted how our students were learning.
